Understanding fibre optics for real-world deployment
An optical fibre consists of a core surrounded by cladding. In single-mode fibre, the core diameter is approximately 9 micrometres.
Signal propagation relies on different refractive indices between core and cladding, which keeps light confined within the fibre.
This mechanism is known as Total Internal Reflection (TIR), the foundation of high-speed long-distance transmission.

Propagation Speed

Actual speed in fibre depends on the material refractive index.
Guiding Condition
Optical guiding occurs when n1 > n2 (core refractive index higher than cladding).
This condition ensures optical signal confinement.
